DSK worked with Dr.Patel and his team to design a Butterfly Vivarium at the University of Chicago’s Marine Biological Laboratory. Designed to breed and host butterflies, the Butterfly Vivarium mimics a rainforest’s atmosphere, with high humidity and butterfly incubators. Triple interlock doors create a series of gateways to control the butterflies’ environment. With a large influx of researchers from around the world in the summer, MBL was interested in hosting flexible lab space that would accommodate the program’s changing needs. The design focused on opening up what was previously a series of enclosed lab spaces to encourage greater access and collaboration. The specialized microscopy room is utilized both for research purposes and teaching space.
